Am 25. April erinnert die Weltgesundheitsorganisation an den Welt-Malaria-Tag. Trauriger Grund: Malaria ist auf dem Vormarsch. Jedes Jahr sterben bis zu drei Millionen Menschen an der Krankheit. “Das ist als ob jeden Tag mindestens sieben Jumbojets abstürzen würden, die Opfer vor allem Frauen und Kinder”, sagt Bernd Pastors, geschäftsführender Vorstand des Deutschen Medikamenten-Hilfswerks action medeor.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2005 of which, more than half a million (570,000) were children. How do the vocal cords actually work and what does the larynx look like from the inside? You can see the answers live in the medicalpicture video. Apart from this, there are many other interesting pictures for professional use in the picture data bank. The voice is generated in the larynx. This is to be found at the upper end of the trachea. House dust mite allergy is caused by mites living in the house dust and the allergy is actually brought on by the excrement of the mites. The house dust mites are co-inhabitants of our domestic environment and have nothing to do with inadequate hygiene. Neither do they carry any diseases. You will find a spectacular selection of mites here in micro-photos. After dessication, the excremental capsules decay into very small particles and join up with the house dust. The concertina barrier-like vascular support (usually made of high grade steel) is introduced to the arterial vessels following balloon dilatation, to reduce the frequency of renewed vascular stenosis. The stents are then coated with medication, which have their own therapeutic effects.
