Laryngeal imaging

Kehlkopf ImagingHow do the vocal cords actually work and what does the larynx look like from the inside? You can see the answers live in the medicalpicture video. Apart from this, there are many other interesting pictures for professional use in the picture data bank. The voice is generated in the larynx. This is to be found at the upper end of the trachea. Inside the larynx there are two flaps covered with mucuos membranes, the vocal cords, into which run fine bands of muscle (vocal ligaments).

The vocal cords are opened when breath is drawn. On utterance, however, they are closed. With the contraction of muscle groups attached to the arytenoid cartilages, larynx imaging ©medicalpicture opens and closes the true glottis. In halation is essential for the generation of the voice.
After inhalation the true glottis is closed. Utterance takes place by virtue of the outflow of breath. The adjoining vocal cords are thereby set into oscillation by the air streaming out of the lungs. On each drawing of breath the vocal cords open, and the true glottis, called the glottis, becomes visible. When speaking or singing, the vocal cords move towards each other until the true glottis is almost closed. In this position, the vocal cords are taut and the air issuing from the lungs blows against them. The result: the vocal cords begin to oscillate, whereupon they shortly begin to open and close. The video shows this process in close detail.
